The First Sorrowful Mystery: The Agony in the Garden

And he came out, and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed him (Lk 22:39). Hail Mary…
And when he came to the place he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation” (Lk 22:40). Hail Mary…
And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled (Mt 26:37). Hail Mary…
Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me” (Mt 26:38). Hail Mary…
And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed (Lk 22:41). Hail Mary…

“Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand” (Mt 26:45-46). Hail Mary…

Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the crowd any one prisoner whom they wanted (Mt 27:15). Hail Mary…
And they had then a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas (Mt 27:16). Hail Mary…
The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas” (Mt 27:21). Hail Mary…
Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified” (Mt 27:22). Hail Mary…
So when Pilate saw he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd (Mt 27:24). Hail Mary…
[Pilate said], “I am innocent of this righteous man’s blood; see to it yourselves” (Mt 27:24). Hail Mary…
And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” (Mt 27:25). Hail Mary…
Then he released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified (Mt 27:26). Hail Mary…

And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of the skull) (Mk 15:22). Hail Mary…
And they offered him wine mingled with myrrh; but he did not take it (Mk 15:23). Hail Mary…

And when they came to the place which is called The Skull, there they crucified him, and the criminals, one on the right and one on the left (Lk 23:33). Hail Mary…
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Lk 23:34). Hail Mary…
One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” (Lk 23:39). Hail Mary…
But the other rebuked him…. And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingly power” (Lk 23:40, 42). Hail Mary…
And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise” (Lk 23:43). Hail Mary…
When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” (Jn 19:26-27). Hail Mary…
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, … “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” (Mt 27:46). Hail Mary…
After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the scripture), “I thirst” (Jn 19:28). Hail Mary…
So they put a sponge full of vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished” (Jn 19:29-30). Hail Mary…
Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last (Lk 23:46). Hail Mary…
